The Junior Leadership Commission

The West Bloomfield Township Parks & Recreation Commission, in partnership with the West Bloomfield Township Public Library, is excited to announce a new initiative for young leaders in our community. The Junior Leadership Commission (WB-JLC) is a unique opportunity for rising 7th and 8th graders at West Bloomfield Middle School who are passionate about community engagement and environmental stewardship.

During a year long term, the junior commissioners will enrich their ecological vocabulary through quarterly, hands-on workshops. We’ll get outside and take a close-up look at the difference between native plants and invasive species. And why the heck does it matter?  We’ll go inside as well and explore our gorgeous and innovative public library with a guided VR headset tour of Gardens of the World.

The junior commissioners will also find out who oils the gears of the local government machine to keep things rolling along. They are required to attend one public meeting of each of the following elected and appointed commissions and boards: Parks & Recreation Commission, Environmental Commission and Library Board. Students will have an opportunity to witness parliamentary procedure in action and to introduce themselves to public officials, while learning about local environmental ordinances, the latest developments at the library or upcoming recreation events.

Each junior commissioner has a unique perspective to share. We want to help them find their powerful voice, to identify issues that they are passionate about and to learn what steps they can take to solve those issues on a local level. We would like the students to go from saying “THEY” should really do something about that to “I” am going to do something about that, and I know exactly who I should speak with.

A formal swearing in ceremony with be led by our very own township Clerk, Debbie Binder, on May 18, 2025. The entire Junior Leadership Commission will also be recognized at the 2026 Michigan Week Awards Ceremony.
